Refer to the story, "Troubled Byimana school installs CCTV cameras” (Sunday Times, January 5).I went to this school and loved it. Discipline is what makes this school excel. However, installing cameras inside locations such as dormitories is a major invasion of privacy. As much as the kids need to be disciplined, they deserve their privacy. As George Orwell wrote, too much intrusion in people’s lives does not let them fulfill their potential. The footage will be undoubtedly be abused by the school authorities and there will be no more freedom for students. I just hope that the footage from the cameras will only be used in cases of criminal investigation and not routinely by school authorities.Francis Kamali, Washington DC, USA****************************It was a pity that the school was set on fire. Not once, but on several occasions! Installing surveillance cameras therefore will serve as deterrence against a repeat of such unfortunate incidents because there is no more reliable option. No one likes being under camera scrutiny, especially when their privacy might be at stake. As a piece of advice, adequate measures should be taken to keep footage safely and avoid misusing itEmmanuel Ntirenganya, Nyarugenge
