More from the ‘summers’

For as long as I can remember, guys from abroad are called ‘summers (pronounced samas)’. I’m not sure if that is how the word is spelt but just go with it. So, who qualifies to be a summer because the rate at which chaps are flying to Juba and Kinshasa and coming back with strange accents, I can’t tell.

For as long as I can remember, guys from abroad are called ‘summers (pronounced samas)’. I’m not sure if that is how the word is spelt but just go with it. So, who qualifies to be a summer because the rate at which chaps are flying to Juba and Kinshasa and coming back with strange accents, I can’t tell.Originally it was people from overseas (read outside countries) and I guess people took those two words (outside countries) seriously and assumed that even the fly that crosses the border is a summer! With all the partying that has been going around Kigali, it’s impossible not to have spotted a summer or two seeing as most of them are back for the holidays. Now, some may take this as ‘hating’ or even ‘bitterness’ but I really must ask, why do some summer chicks insist on dressing like $2 hookers? I’m sorry but it’s the truth. I was out last weekend and as I made way to the bathroom, I noticed a table of seriously scantily dressed chicks. I naturally assumed they were ‘our sisters’ from the streets. As I used the bathroom, two of the girls walked in and it was evident that they did not live here. I couldn’t place their accents as everything seemed so exaggerated but I suspected British. One of the girls received a phone call from her friend back in Croydon and it was confirmed. But for the life of me, I did not understand what they were doing walking around in what looked like shredded napkins! One of them made the tragic mistake of adding a belt to the whole mix and it was a disaster to say the least. What I truly admired was their lack of concern about how badly they were dressed. In fact, the way they walked around the place as if their seats had nails was proof that to them, you can’t get smarter than that. There’s nothing wrong with a mini skirt or some skimpy shorts but when chicks start donning handkerchiefs, then there is need to worry. ‘Our sisters’ on the streets are dressing much better! What the hell? And it probably wouldn’t look so strange if it was teenagers dressing like that because we can at lease excuse them for being young. These were grown women; one of them looked like she had pushed out a whole soccer team and also been a surrogate like thrice maybe – it was that bad. Summers are supposed to be cool, but there was nothing cool about the ones I saw! I would ask them to style up but since we are under the impression that summers are already styled up, all I can do is shake my head.
