The Men Respond: I promised a client a date just to land a deal

I market for a certain company and my job means a lot to me as it pays my bills. Recently I got into big negotiations with a client for a huge deal. This client seems to have a thing for me and that’s why he is keeping things smooth as the deal goes on.

I market for a certain company and my job means a lot to me as it pays my bills. Recently I got into big negotiations with a client for a huge deal. This client seems to have a thing for me and that’s why he is keeping things smooth as the deal goes on.

I really don’t like him but he asked me to go out for a drink with him. I am dating and it wouldn’t sound good to my boyfriend yet I also don’t want to mess up and miss out on the deal with the client.

Quit acting like a little girl

Being a marketer you must have learnt the art of deception and how far it can take you. There is no problem going for a drink with a client that brings in revenue to your business. It could be you who is taking things too far and over thinking of what the client wants with you.

Being a business person, you should have to realise that it is common for business people to share drinks and it is not always as it seems. He could be deceiving you into thinking he has a thing for you; polished business men will never lose money chasing women. Even if he was interested in you, you should act like you feel the same way without talking about it all the way, it will open up the business deals and after you are done doing business, you can keep your distance.

Do not be so naïve, act like a grown up, do not spoil a business deal just because the demons in your head lie to you that your client wants to sleep with you. All the best and please remember to share the proceeds of your deal.

He will not respect you

Whatever is done in the light for the right reason is priceless. If you think you should go on with the date just because you don’t want to sabotage the deal you have with the client, then what happens if he asks for more? He could ask you to meet him in a hotel room. Will you do it just to secure a deal?

There are very polite ways of saying no to something without annoying the other party and yet still leave him with a lot of respect for you. Otherwise, you will make him assume that you are someone who would do anything to get ahead. He will also take advantage of that because that is what you have led him to believe.

Say no to him in a respectful way and he will forever look at you with respect and treat you like a lady. If things don’t go as planned, your dignity will get you where you are supposed to be and not shame.

Keep it professional

The situation you are in is not new, though it sounds like a tough situation; many people find themselves in similar situations from time to time. Some throw in the towel and call it off; some manage to go through it successfully.

Do you believe in morals, value and integrity?  If you do, then this shouldn’t be a problem. What you need to do is to go ahead with the meeting.

If he tries to bring up something that is not work-related, politely but firmly let him know you are in a relationship and have no interest in him at all.

Try to be as professional as you can be. Remember it’s all up to u to do what’s right. Just make sure you won’t regret your decision.
