The United Nations General Assembly resolution 56/38 of 5 Dec 2001 refers to volunteering, volunteerism and voluntary activities as action undertaken out of free will, for the general public good and where monetary reward is not the principal motivating factor.
It comprises a wide range of activities, including traditional forms of mutual aid and self-help, formal service delivery and other forms of civic participation. Volunteerism is universal, it is one of the most basic of expressions of human behaviour and arises out of long-established ancient traditions of sharing and reciprocal exchanges. At its core are human relationships and their potential to enhance the well-being of individuals and communities.
