The current saga surrounding the redeployment of Maj. Gen. Karenzi Karake as the Deputy Commander of UNAMID, sends a very disquieting signal; that the United Nations is a very fragile and week body.

That the Secretary General of the UN could spend sleepless nights pondering whether to renew Karenzi’s contract– as he automatically did for the others in the UNAMID command– simply because of some judge in a Spanish town (who must be a sleepwalker) has dreamt of Karenzi, is mind boggling to say the least.

The whole parody is not only laughable, it is also based on the basis of some flimsy charges that do not only hold any water, but would dissolve in shame if they came into contact with any liquid. When the accusations against Karenzi, popularly known as KK surfaced, he had just been proposed to the post.

Genocidaires (living within reach of the Spanish judge) raised their voices in protest possibly out of frustration because during their watch, none in their Kraal had the foresight rise above the petty cleavages and put their country on the world map.

Rwanda was called to fill the deputy commander’s role because the world had faith in its capabilities, the same goes for KK when his name was put forward by his country.
If the UN and the Americans cleared Karenzi before he could begin his first term, why is it now that Ban Ki-moon suddenly feels uneasy all because of some trumped up charges?

If the UN had really wanted to come to the bottom of this affair and settle it once and for all, it would have had ample time by now to carry out its probe instead of fretting over a non-existing issue.

The time is now for the UN to redeem itself. It has ridden out severe storms caused by countless scandals that have hardly dented its image, so how come it fears to face the truth about the KK affair?
