Age ain’t nothing but a number

People seem to always have an opinion on the age issue when it comes to dating. Well in my humble opinion, I don’t think age matters.

When I was younger, I used to think girls who dated older guys were obviously just trying to be bad girls and so I decided to be the good girl. I always dated guys my own age. Of course I had a crush on some older men but it never went past that. In college, I continued to date within my age group, experimented with older guys but never more than a 2-3 year age gap.

Then I hit my late twenties and I gave up on men in my age group because I simply realised men and women do not mature at the same speed. I know that may sound offensive but really we are just from different planets.  In my many years of experience, I discovered that it takes an older man to understand a woman and create an equal partnership. This is not to say older women cannot date younger men but I wonder about their kind of conversation.

It is interesting that our parents never had this problem. Most of the people I know have parents with an age difference of about 10 years! But that never stopped them from accomplishing what they wanted in life.

I found out that the greatest problem parents have with young women dating, is that parents are afraid their daughters will get married instead of achieving the greater ‘goals’ in life like careers and education. We all know marriage is like a death trap and once you are married nothing happens after that but reproduction.

It must be agreed on that some relationships that have an age gap are not always equal. This is up to you to have a conversation with your daughter, get to know the man she is marrying and enlighten them on good marriage practices. However, do not tell your daughter that she is a weakling that is bound to be dominated by her soon to be husband. I’m sure that will do a number on her self-esteem.

Like we all know, age really is just the number of years you have been on this earth, it is the experiences within those years that really mean something. If you meet someone who is older or younger, look deeper than the age and you may find a great partner.

Have you dated older or younger? What was your experience like?
