Several prominent players from the Rwanda Basketball League (RBL) have secured moves to clubs across the region ahead of the 2027 Basketball Africa League (BAL) qualifiers, underscoring the league’s growing reputation as a breeding ground for talent on the continental stage.

The Road to BAL Elite 16 will be contested across two divisions. Division West is scheduled for November 10-15 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, while Division East will take place from November 24-29 in Nairobi, Kenya.

Reigning RBL Most Valuable Player Garba Chingka Kennedy has joined Burundian champions Urunani, where he will reunite with former Patriots teammate Jeffery Tyrone Stubbs as the club prepares for the qualifiers.

Tanzanian champions Dar City have also bolstered their roster with players familiar to Rwandan basketball fans.

RSSB Tigers guard Nisre Zouzoua has rejoined the Dar es Salaam-based side on a short-term deal. He will link up with American forward Tyler Tarik Bey as Dar City look to strengthen their squad ahead of the competition.

Meanwhile, Kepler forward Chad Bowie has signed for Kenyan champions Nairobi City Thunder, who will be seeking to make the most of home-court advantage during their Elite 16 campaign.

APR guard Antino Jackson Jr. has also secured a short-term move to Libyan side Al-Ittihad SC for the qualifiers, while his teammate Justin Uwitonze moved to Ghanaian side Spintex Knights ahead of the competition.

The growing presence of RBL players at clubs across the region highlights the league’s increasing profile and its value to teams looking to reinforce their rosters for continental competitions.

Under the qualification format, the top two teams from each division, together with the best third-placed team across both divisions, will claim five of the 12 places in the 2027 BAL season.

They will join seven teams that have secured automatic qualification through their respective domestic leagues: Angola, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal and Tunisia.
