Rwanda Energy Group (REG) women’s basketball club have appointed former Rwanda national team coach Cheikh Sarr as their new head coach ahead of the FIBA Africa Zone 5 Women’s Club Championship, scheduled for October 17-24 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The 58-year-old Senegalese coach led Rwanda’s men’s and women’s national teams from April 2021 until September 2025. He had been contracted to remain in the role until March 2027, but the two parties mutually agreed to end his tenure.

Sarr is already in Rwanda and took charge of his first training session with REG on Wednesday evening as the reigning champions step up preparations for the regional competition.

REG retained the national women’s basketball league title after sweeping The Hoops Rwanda 4-0 in the best-of-seven finals series.

The triumph secured REG’s place as Rwanda’s representatives at the Zone 5 championship, which brings together leading women’s basketball clubs from the region.

At least 10 teams have already confirmed their participation in this year’s tournament, with clubs from Uganda, Burundi, Tanzania, Kenya, South Sudan and Rwanda set to compete.
