Cape Verde 1-2 Rwanda
Rwanda maintained their perfect start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with a spirited 2-1 comeback victory over Cape Verde in a Group K encounter at the Estádio Nacional de Cabo Verde on Tuesday.
The result saw Amavubi collect a maximum six points from their opening two matches to go top of the group.
Cape Verde began brightly on home soil and looked the more dangerous side in the opening exchanges. Their pressure paid off five minutes before halftime when veteran forward Ryan Mendes set up Gilson Tavares, who calmly finished to give the hosts a deserved 1-0 lead in the 40th minute.
Just as Cape Verde appeared set to take their advantage into the break, Rwanda struck back in dramatic fashion. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Joy-Lance Mickels delivered a perfectly weighted pass to Claude Niyomugabo, who made no mistake in finding the net to level matters at 1-1 in the 45 2nd minute.
The equalizer transformed the momentum of the contest and gave Rwanda renewed belief heading into the second half.
Coach Stephen Constantine's tactical changes after the interval proved decisive. Elie Tatou Iradukunda was introduced in place of Abeddy Biramahire and immediately made his presence felt.
Seven minutes into the second half, Mickels once again turned provider, delivering another key pass that Iradukunda clinically converted in the 52nd minute to complete Rwanda's comeback and put the visitors ahead for the first time.
The goal ultimately proved to be the match-winner as Amavubi produced a disciplined defensive display to protect their advantage against a Cape Verde side searching for a response.
Mickels emerged as one of Rwanda's standout performers, creating both goals and constantly troubling the hosts with his creativity and movement in the attacking third.
The match also provided a memorable moment for Emeran Norman, who made his senior debut for the national team after coming off the bench in the second half.
Despite the victory, Rwanda suffered a setback ahead of their next assignment.
After two rounds of matches, Rwanda sit atop Group K with six points, while Mali have three points. Cape Verde and Liberia are yet to register a point.
The impressive away victory further highlighted the growing confidence and resilience of Constantine's side, who have now won both of their opening qualifiers and taken a significant step forward in their quest to secure a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
