President Paul Kagame on Tuesday, September 22, met with Regis O. N’Sonde, an Executive Director on the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Executive Board, who represents Rwanda and 22 other African countries.

According to the Office of the President, the discussions focused on Rwanda’s economic growth and continued cooperation with the IMF.

Rwanda’s economy grew by 9.4 per cent in 2025, while GDP expanded by 9.4 per cent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, according to the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda.

IMF projects Rwanda’s growth to moderate to 6.8 per cent in 2026 amid external risks, including higher international oil and fertiliser prices.

In April, Rwanda reached a staff-level agreement with the IMF for a $250 million, 38-month programme aimed at supporting economic reforms, maintaining economic stability and promoting private sector-led growth.

The IMF Executive Board approved the programme in June and authorised an immediate disbursement of about $35.7 million.

Rwanda has worked with the IMF through various programmes and policy consultations over the years, with the fund providing financial support and policy advice to support economic stability and growth.
