Prime Minister Justin Nsengiyumva will represent President Paul Kagame at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) in New York.

The 81st UNGA session opened on September 8, with its General Debate scheduled for September 22 to 26and September 28.

The annual debate brings together heads of state, government and other high-level representatives to outline their positions and priorities on global issues.

This year’s session is being held under the theme, "Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”

The UN said the session will "once again convene world leaders to revitalise global cooperation, give a critical push to the Sustainable Development Goals and drive collective action for peace, dignity and equality on a healthy planet.”

Nearly 130 heads of state and government are expected to attend in person.

At the session, Nsengiyumva is expected to deliver Rwanda’s national statement on Wednesday, September 23, highlighting Rwanda’s perspectives and priorities on key global and regional issues.

The Prime Minister will also participate in high-level meetings, side events and bilateral engagements with various partners, providing an opportunity to exchange views on issues of mutual interest and strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

Several high-level meetings are scheduled during the week, including a meeting to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development and a high-level meeting on climate action and the just transition on September 23.

Other meetings will focus on sea-level rise on September 24 and pandemic prevention, preparedness and response on September 25.
