The Toronto Raptors have finalized a blockbuster trade, securing the return of two-time NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Kawhi Leonard.

Their deal with the Los Angeles Clippers was officially confirmed on Monday. Moving in the opposite direction are Brandon Ingram and Gradey Dick, alongside a hefty package of draft capital consisting of two future first-round picks, a pick swap in 2027, and two future second-round selections.

The completion of the agreement was heavily delayed following its initial handshake on June 30.

The NBA previously placed a hold on the transaction to launch an extensive salary-cap circumvention investigation regarding an alleged off-the-books endorsement deal under the Clippers‘ roof. After months of regulatory standstill and final disciplinary rulings handed down to the Los Angeles organisation, the pathway cleared for the paperwork to be formally processed.

Steering the franchise forward, Raptors general manager and executive vice-president Bobby Webster expressed tremendous enthusiasm about welcoming Leonard back to Canada.

"We’re thrilled to welcome Kawhi back to Toronto. His impact on our organisation, our city, and our country is undeniable, and he embodies the competitiveness and championship mindset that we value,” he said in the press release.

"We believe his leadership, experience and talent will help us as we continue building toward our next championship. We also want to thank Brandon and Gradey and appreciate their work ethic, character, and basketball excellence they brought to our team every day.”

For Leonard, who averaged 27.9 points per game with his hometown team in California last season, the trade marks a reunion with the team he famously guided to the NBA championship in 2019. He will play under the guidance of Serbian play-caller Darko Rajakovic.
