Senator Espérance Nyirasafari has called on Rubavu border community to remain vigilant and guard against the Genocide ideology that persists in the neighbouring DR Congo.

She made the remarks this week during a Rubavu District Council meeting presenting key achievements from the 2021-2026 mandate as the council’s five-year term draws to a close.

"The fact that we neighbour DR Congo which hosts the FDLR, not just as a militia but as a genocidal armed group means we must stay alert. Many of its members committed crimes during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi before fleeing across the border, and those who join them operate under the same ideology," Nyirasafari said.

"We must urge our population to reject anything that could promote that ideology and prevent it from being disseminated," she added.

Addressing participants on the security situation, Major General Eugène Nkubito, the 3rd Division Commander in Western Province, highlighted the security threat posed by armed groups and warned border residents against illegal crossings.
