Rwanda Energy Group (REG) have shifted their focus to the FIBA Africa Zone 5 Women’s Club Championship scheduled for November.

REG retained the national women’s basketball league title after sweeping The Hoops Rwanda 4-0 in the best-of-seven playoff final series, completing a dominant campaign with a convincing 73-46 victory in Game 4.

The triumph secured REG’s place as Rwanda’s representatives at the regional championship, which brings together top women’s basketball clubs from across Africa. At least 10 teams have already confirmed their participation.

The confirmed participants include clubs from Uganda, Burundi, Tanzania, Kenya, South Sudan and Rwanda.

FIBA Africa is yet to announce the host country for the 2026 Women’s Basketball League Africa (WBLA) Zone 5 qualifiers.

REG head coach Esperance Mukaneza told Times Sport that the team will begin preparations for the competition next week.

"We want to win the Zone V title, and we have only a short period of two months. Of course, it will not be easy, but we have to compete,” Mukaneza said.

She added that the domestic league had provided the team with valuable preparation ahead of the regional competition.

"The league has helped us gain valuable experience, with most of the players having played against some of the best players in the domestic league,” she noted.

REG were among two Rwandan clubs that represented the country in the 2025 edition of the Zone 5 championship, alongside APR. The two sides met in the final, where APR emerged 82-71 winners to claim their first WBLA Zone 5 title.

Founded in 2021 and sponsored by Rwanda Energy Group, REG have quickly established themselves as a dominant force in Rwanda’s domestic women’s basketball, while also making their mark on the regional stage.
