Aston Villa host Arsenal at Villa Park on Monday in a Premier League fixture carrying a special connection to Rwanda, with the two clubs representing Visit Rwanda’s former and current partnerships.
The meeting comes just two months after Visit Rwanda ended its eight-year partnership with Arsenal and began a new agreement with Aston Villa, making Monday’s fixture the first meeting between the two clubs since the change.
Visit Rwanda’s partnership with Arsenal began in 2018 and ran for eight seasons before ending on June 30, 2026. During that period, Visit Rwanda served as Arsenal’s Official Sleeve Partner, using the partnership to promote Rwanda as a tourism destination while supporting conservation and other initiatives.
Aston Villa subsequently became Visit Rwanda’s new Premier League partner
The new agreement makes Visit Rwanda Aston Villa’s Principal Partner and Official Tourism Partner, with the brand appearing on the front of the men’s, women’s and academy shirts. It also includes football and professional development programmes.
Monday’s fixture therefore brings Visit Rwanda’s former and current Premier League partners together on the pitch.
Arsenal arrive as champions
Arsenal enter the match as the reigning Premier League champions after ending a 22-year wait for the English top-flight title last season.
Mikel Arteta’s side began their title defence with a 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City. The Gunners also won the Community Shield before the league campaign, giving them two victories and two clean sheets at the start of the new season.
Arsenal could hand new signing Ezri Konsa a debut against his former club. The England defender joined the Gunners from Villa during the summer and is available for selection at his former home.
Villa seeking a response
Aston Villa will be looking to bounce back from a difficult start to the season.
Unai Emery’s side suffered a 4-0 defeat away to Brighton in their opening Premier League match, with Joao Gomes sent off during the game.
Villa have also made significant changes to their squad during the summer, with several established players leaving, including World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. The club has responded with new additions, among them Germany midfielder Leon Goretzka and forward Nicolas Jackson.
Villa’s recent home record against reigning champions, however, offers encouragement. They have won their last three Premier League home matches against defending champions.
History favours Arsenal
Arsenal hold the overall advantage in recent meetings. Their latest league encounter ended in a 4-1 victory for the Gunners at the Emirates in December 2025, although Villa won the previous meeting 2-1 at Villa Park.
With both teams seeking an important result, Monday’s encounter promises to be a competitive contest.
For Rwanda, the fixture offers a high-profile moment in the transition between two major Premier League partnerships.
On the pitch, Arsenal will look to maintain their strong start to the title defence, while Villa will be seeking their first league points of the season.
