SC Kiyovu ended a 32-year wait for major silverware after defeating Police FC 1-0 to win the 2026 FERWAFA Super Cup at Kigali Pelé Stadium on Sunday.
The Green Baggies secured the trophy through a stunning late strike from Hakim Hamiss, whose spectacular bicycle kick in the 84th minute settled a tightly contested encounter and handed Kiyovu the first silverware of the new domestic season.
Hamiss’ decisive goal capped a dream debut for the forward, who had only recently been cleared to play after a high-profile transfer dispute with his former club, Gasogi United.
Both teams started at a high tempo, eager to gain an early advantage while maintaining their defensive shape.
Police FC looked the more dangerous side in the opening half and created several promising opportunities.
Their clearest chance fell to Keffa Tangara, whose powerful effort was brilliantly tipped over the crossbar by Kiyovu goalkeeper Désiré Bienvenue Djayoyang.
Despite enjoying greater possession and creating the better chances before the break, Police failed to turn their dominance into a goal.
Kiyovu returned from halftime with renewed energy and gradually took control of the game. The Green Baggies created several opportunities of their own but struggled to find the finishing touch.
With the match appearing destined for a penalty shootout, Hamiss produced a moment of brilliance to separate the sides.
Six minutes before the end of regulation time, the forward met a delivery into the penalty area and executed a spectacular bicycle kick that flew beyond the reach of the Police goalkeeper, sending Kiyovu players and supporters into wild celebrations.
The goal capped a remarkable week for Hamiss, whose participation had remained uncertain until legal issues surrounding his move from Gasogi United were resolved shortly before kickoff.
Police coach Rkyek Jaafar responded by throwing more players forward in search of an equaliser, but his side could not break down a determined Kiyovu defence.
When the final whistle sounded, jubilant scenes erupted among Kiyovu players, officials and supporters as the club celebrated its first major trophy in more than three decades.
The victory marked Kiyovu’s first FERWAFA-organised trophy since 1994. The club’s most recent silverware came in October 2022, when they defeated arch-rivals Rayon Sports 2-1 to win the Made in Rwanda Cup.
The Super Cup triumph also earned Kiyovu Rwf40 million in prize money, while Police FC received Rwf20 million as runners-up.
