Prime Minister Justin Nsengiyumva has arrived in Luanda, Angola, where he will represent President Paul Kagame at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) on August 30.

The summit will focus on strengthening mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution in Africa, as the continent continues to grapple with several armed conflicts and security crises.

The session will be held at the Luanda Convention Palace, according to the AU. It follows the 26th Extraordinary Session of the AU Executive Council, which is being held in Luanda on August 29 and brings together foreign ministers and senior officials responsible for external relations from member states.

The AU says the extraordinary summit is intended to strengthen continental mechanisms for preventing and resolving conflicts, while providing a platform for political consultation among member states on peace and stability and the peaceful resolution of crises.

The meeting comes as Africa faces a number of unresolved conflicts, including the war in Sudan, the crisis in DR Congo, jihadist insurgencies in the Sahel, instability in the Horn of Africa and armed violence in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province.
