Rayon Sports WFC opened their CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA Qualifiers campaign with a goalless draw against Zanzibar’s Mafunzo SC at Kigali Pelé Stadium on Friday, August 21.
The hosts dominated possession and created several opportunities but could not find the breakthrough as both sides settled for a point in a game largely contested in midfield.

Rayon Sports looked the more threatening side for much of the match, with their attacking players creating openings around the Mafunzo penalty area. However, the Rwandan side lacked the finishing touch needed to turn their dominance into goals.
Mafunzo also had chances of their own, particularly when they managed to break forward, but Rayon’s defence remained composed to keep a clean sheet.
The result leaves both teams with one point in Group A, which also features South Sudan’s Yei Joint Stars and Eritrea’s Denden WFC.
Earlier on Friday at the same venue, Yei Joint Stars made an impressive start to their campaign with a 3-0 victory over Denden WFC in the opening match of the qualifiers.
Yei Joint Stars therefore sit top of Group A after the first round of matches, while Rayon Sports and Mafunzo share second place and Denden are bottom.
The CECAFA qualifiers, which run from August 21 to 31 in Kigali, will determine the region’s representative at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League.
