Four people were killed and 16 others injured after a Coaster bus rolled over in Kirehe District early on Monday, August 17.

The bus was carrying 29 people who were from a wedding ceremony in Kayonza District, before it crashed in Nasho Sector at around 1am, according to police.

SP Hamdun Twizeyimana, Police spokesperson for Eastern Province, told The New Times that two people died at the scene, while two others died on their way to hospital.

Of the 16 people who were injured, one was transferred to Rwanda Military Hospital in Kanombe, while the others were admitted to Kirehe District Hospital. Four of those admitted have since been discharged.

The exact cause of the accident had not been established by the time of publication. However, preliminary findings point to possible over-speeding, Twizeyimana said.

The driver, however, told police that the accident was caused by brake failure.

"The message to road users is that they should continue respecting road safety rules and avoid mistakes such as over-speeding,” he said.

"Passengers should hold drivers accountable when they see them making mistakes that could lead to accidents and claim their lives,” Twizeyimana said.
