Amahoro Stadium is set to undergo further upgrades at a cost of Rwf90.7 billion.
The newly refurbished stadium was officially inaugurated on July 1, 2024, in a ceremony presided over by President Paul Kagame and Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe.
With a seating capacity of 45,000 spectators, Amahoro Stadium occupies approximately 75,000 square metres and rises 40 metres above ground level.
Its reconstruction, completed at a cost of about $160 million, incorporated world-class facilities required by both FIFA and CAF, firmly positioning it among the continent's leading stadiums.
However, following its reopening, authorities identified additional improvements needed to enhance the stadium's functionality and expand its capacity to host a wider range of events.
According to Rwanda's 2026/27 national budget, which took effect in July 2026, the government has earmarked Rwf90.7 billion for further renovation works at Amahoro Stadium as part of broader investments in sports infrastructure across the country.
The Ministry of Sports said the planned upgrades are intended to transform the facility into a more versatile venue capable of accommodating major sporting, entertainment, and commercial events.
One of the key concerns raised by visitors has been the poor visibility of content displayed on the stadium's two giant screens. Spectators seated in different sections have frequently complained that images and messages shown during events are difficult to see.
To address the issue, the stadium's screens will be expanded to ensure clear visibility from all seating areas. The problem has been particularly noticeable in the VIP section, where television screens were previously installed to help guests follow proceedings more comfortably.
The VIP area is also expected to undergo significant improvements. Another major aspect of the renovation will focus on enabling the stadium to host large-scale concerts and entertainment events without damaging the playing surface.
The upgrades are also expected to improve the stadium's sound system.
The 2026/27 budget also provides funding for other sports infrastructure projects across the country including Ngoma Stadium, Bugesera Stadium and Nyagatare Stadium.
