Rwandan defender Emmanuel Imanishimwe has joined Indian Super League side Chennaiyin FC on an undisclosed deal.

The 31-year-old left-back joins the Indian club after a difficult spell with Cypriot side AEL Limassol.

Chennaiyin FC head coach Vita Dani welcomed Imanishimwe to the club, saying his experience and leadership will add value to the squad.

"Emmanuel is a player we believe can bring something different to our squad. His experience with the Rwanda national team speaks for itself, and we have been impressed by what he can offer.

"He is strong defensively, understands the game well, and brings valuable leadership qualities. We are happy to have him with us and look forward to seeing him contribute to the team.”

Imanishimwe said he was delighted to join Chennaiyin and ready to embrace a new challenge in Indian football.

"I’m very happy to join Chennaiyin FC and to be part of the team this year. I’m excited about the club’s project.

"I share the same ambition as the team, which is to fight for every game and win as much as we can. We want to compete for the championship, and we will give everything to achieve that.”

Imanishimwe began his senior career with Rayon Sports before establishing himself as one of Rwanda’s leading defenders during a successful spell with APR FC.

In 2021, he moved to Moroccan giants AS FAR Rabat, where he played a key role in the club’s 2022/23 Botola Pro League title-winning campaign.

He later joined AEL Limassol, gaining European experience before making the switch to India.

At international level, Imanishimwe has been a regular member of Rwanda’s senior national team, earning more than 30 caps and representing the Amavubi in regional and continental competitions.
