Former APR FC captain Claude Niyomugabo has emerged as a major transfer target for Rayon Sports, with the Blues joining the race to secure his services, Times Sport understands.
The Rwandan defender parted ways with APR FCafter contract renewal negotiations broke down, with the two sides reportedly unable to agree on his signing-on fee and salary demands.
Reports indicate that Niyomugabo had requested a signing-on fee of Rwf100 million and a monthly salary of Rwf6 million to renew his contract with APR FC. However, the army side reportedly rejected his demands, offering only half of the requested signing-on fee.
Niyomugabo was also on the verge of joining Tanzanian club Azam FC but withdrew from the deal for undisclosed reasons.
Times Sport understands that Rayon Sports are closely monitoring the defender's situation as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of a busy campaign that will include domestic competitions and the CAF Confederation Cup.
Rayon Sports interim president Abdallah Murenzi has openly acknowledged the club's interest in Niyomugabo, although he admitted that financial constraints could complicate any potential deal.
Following Rayon Sports' successful CECAFA Kagame Cup campaign, Murenzi said the club had identified key areas that need strengthening ahead of their continental campaign.
Asked about the possibility of signing Niyomugabo, Murenzi said several clubs were competing for the defender's signature.
"I am aware that many have spoken to him. He is a talented player, a former captain and a national team player. He is someone who would help us,” Murenzi said.
"If he were to express a desire to join Rayon Sports, we would certainly welcome that. However, we must consider our current spending spree, our financial capacity and the specific positions we need to strengthen.”
Niyomugabo was among APR FC's standout performers during the 2025/26 season, helping the club win the Rwanda Premier League and Peace Cup titles.
He also played a key role in Rwanda's triumph at the FIFA Series tournament held in Kigali in March.
