Rwanda international Lague Byiringiro is on the verge of completing a move to South African Premiership side Durban City FC after reaching an agreement in principle with the newly promoted club.

The 25-year-old is understood to have agreed a two-year contract with the Durban-based outfit, with the deal expected to take effect ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Byiringiro recently became a free agent after leaving Police FC before the end of the 2025/26 campaign.

Despite showing flashes of brilliance and establishing himself as one of the Rwanda Premier League's most technically gifted wingers, his time at Police FC was hampered by inconsistent playing time and off-field controversies.

Following his departure, Byiringiro made it clear that he wanted to continue his career abroad, believing a more competitive environment would help him further develop his game.

After considering several offers, he opted for Durban City, where he hopes to relaunch his career in one of Africa's most competitive leagues.

A flight has already been booked for the Rwandan winger, who is expected to leave Kigali on August 7 to complete the final stages of the transfer and link up with his new teammates for pre-season preparations.

Byiringiro has built a reputation as one of Rwanda's most exciting attacking talents over the past decade.

He began his career at Vision FC before progressing through Isonga FC and Intare FC. He was later promoted to APR FC, where he spent five seasons.

In 2022, Byiringiro moved abroad for the first time, joining Swedish second-tier side Sandvikens IF before returning to the Rwandan league after agreeing to a move to Police FC in January 2025.

New challenge in South Africa

Byiringiro will join Durban City as the club embarks on a new chapter in South African football.

The club was formerly known as Maritzburg United before relocating to Durban and rebranding in 2024.

Durban City secured promotion to the South African Premiership after winning the 2024/25 Motsepe Foundation Championship, the country's second tier.

The club plays its home matches at Chatsworth Stadium and is chaired by Farook Kadodia. It recently appointed Tunisian coach Khalil Ben Youssef to oversee its first full campaign in the top flight.

As part of an ambitious recruitment drive ahead of the new season, Durban City have strengthened their squad with several new arrivals, including Gaston Sirino, Junior Papier, Kabelo Mofokeng, Lifa Makua, Siya Msomi, John Mokone, Tylo Sanger and Seth Green.

Byiringiro will now look to establish himself in the squad and use the move as an opportunity to revive his career on the international stage.
