A fierce battle between four of Rwanda Basketball League (RBL) heavyweights will unfold when the playoffs tip off on August 5.
Defending champions APR, Patriots, Rwanda Energy Group (REG) and RSSB Tigers secured their places in the semi-finals after finishing the regular season in the top four.
The semi-final matchups will see top-seeded APR face fourth-placed RSSB Tigers, while Patriots, who finished second, will take on third-placed REG.
The playoffs will be staged at BK Arena, with the semi-finals played in a best-of-five format and the finals in a best-of-seven series.
Among the matchups, the clash between APR and RSSB Tigers stands out. APR will be seeking to strengthen their dominance of domestic basketball, while the Tigers enter the series as the reigning Basketball Africa League (BAL) champions after making history by winning the 2026 title in Kigali in June.
The two teams have developed a growing rivalry and are now set for another showdown that could further shape the landscape of Rwandan basketball.
Here are four things to know ahead of the highly anticipated semi-final series:
1. Head-to-head
APR and RSSB Tigers split their two regular-season meetings, with each team claiming one victory.
The Tigers won the first encounter 89-80 before APR responded with an 84-82 victory in the second round.
They will now renew their rivalry in a best-of-five semi-final series after APR finished top of the regular-season standings with 30 points, three ahead of fourth-placed RSSB Tigers.
APR also finished the regular season with a higher scoring tally, accumulating 1,515 points compared with the Tigers' 1,473.
2. Key players
RSSB Tigers strengthened their roster with the signing of Ivorian shooting guard Nisre Zouzoua, who joined the team as a replacement for injured Kenyan guard Albert Odero.
The 29-year-old Zouzoua scored 168 points and made 26 three-pointers during the regular season.
Captain Antino Jackson has also been instrumental to the Tigers' campaign, finishing the regular season with 183 points, 52 rebounds and 32 three-pointers.
APR, meanwhile, will look to Teafale Lenard Jr, who contributed 101 points and 58 rebounds during the regular season. Lenard was part of the RSSB Tigers squad that won the BAL title before joining APR.
American guard Craig Randall is another key figure in the matchup. He joined APR after helping the Tigers win the 2026 BAL title, where he was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Randall also made history during the BAL campaign, setting records for the most points scored in a single game (54) and the most three-pointers made in a game (11).
He now returns to domestic competition wearing APR colours, facing the team he helped lead to continental glory just months ago.
3. Trophy history
APR are the most successful club in Rwandan basketball history, with 16 league titles to their name.
The military side won their championships in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2023, 2024 and 2025.
RSSB Tigers, meanwhile, are still chasing their first RBL championship. Their only major domestic trophy came in 2025, when they won the Rwanda Basketball Cup.
Later that year, the Rwanda Social Security Board (RSSB) took full ownership of the club, which was subsequently renamed RSSB Tigers.
The club made history in 2026 by winning the BAL title on their debut, beating Angola's Petro de Luanda 90-88 in the final in Kigali.
4. Coaches' battle
The series will also feature an intriguing coaching battle between Tanzania's Henry Mwinuka and American James Maye Jr.
Mwinuka guided RSSB Tigers to the 2026 BAL title in their debut campaign and was subsequently named BAL Coach of the Year.
Maye Jr, meanwhile, is the head coach of APR and previously served as an assistant to Mwinuka at RSSB Tigers.
Under Maye Jr, APR have established themselves as one of the strongest teams in the RBL. He also guided the military side to a third-place finish at the 2025 BAL playoffs in Pretoria, South Africa.
The reunion between the two coaches adds another layer of intrigue to what promises to be a fiercely contested semi-final series between two teams with growing ambitions both at home and on the continental stage.
