The University of Kigali (UoK) has marked another significant milestone in its internationalisation agenda with the departure of seven top-performing students from the School of Business, Management and Economics for a fully funded academic exchange programme in Germany.
The exchange is supported through the Erasmus Programme, LEARN Logistics gGmbH, and the Baden-Württemberg Scholarship Programme via DHBW University, providing students with an exceptional opportunity to gain international academic exposure, cross-cultural competencies, and practical learning experiences in one of Europe's leading higher education environments.
Prior to their departure, the students and their parents or guardians met with the University’s senior leadership, who congratulated them and encouraged them to serve as exemplary ambassadors of both the University and Rwanda.
Speaking during the send-off meeting, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. George Kimathi, emphasised that international mobility remains central to the University’s vision of producing graduates who can compete and lead in the global knowledge economy.
"International mobility is a cornerstone of our vision to develop globally competitive graduates. Through strategic partnerships such as this, our students gain international perspectives, strengthen their academic and professional competencies, and return better equipped to contribute to Rwanda's national development. We are proud of these students and deeply appreciate our international partners for making this opportunity possible."
Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Martin Gachukia, noted that international exchange programmes complement classroom learning by exposing students to diverse teaching approaches, academic cultures, and innovative problem-solving methods.
"Academic excellence today extends beyond the classroom. These exchange opportunities enrich our students' learning experience, broaden their perspectives, and enable them to engage with different educational systems and global best practices."
Associate Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation & Enterprise, Dr. Ronald Kwena, highlighted the importance of international exposure in nurturing innovation, entrepreneurship, and research collaboration.
"Innovation thrives when students are exposed to different ideas, cultures, and technologies. Participation in international exchange programmes cultivates critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative skills that are essential for research, entrepreneurship, and solving real-world challenges."
The Director of International Student Services and Partnerships, CPA Dorcas Kamau described the exchange as another important achievement in advancing the University's internationalisation strategy.
"Every successful student mobility programme strengthens the University's international footprint and demonstrates our commitment to providing transformative global learning experiences. Beyond academic excellence, these exchanges promote intercultural understanding, leadership, and global citizenship."
The students expressed excitement and gratitude for the opportunity. One of the beneficiaries remarked that the University's strong commitment to international mobility influenced the decision to enroll at UoK.

Parents also conveyed their appreciation to the University and its international partners for investing in their children's future.

The departure of these seven students further demonstrates the University of Kigali's growing commitment to internationalisation and its vision of producing globally competitive graduates.
Through strategic partnerships with leading universities in Germany, Cyprus, Poland, South Korea, and other countries, the University continues to expand opportunities for students and staff to gain international academic and professional exposure.
Over the past two years alone, the University has successfully facilitated numerous fully funded international exchange programmes through Erasmus and other global partnerships.
Students from the School of Business Management and Economics have participated in academic exchanges at the University of Nicosia (Cyprus), WSG University (Poland), DHBW University (Germany), and Kempten University of Applied Sciences (Germany), where they studied alongside international peers, experienced different teaching and learning approaches, and developed valuable intercultural, leadership, and professional skills.
The University has also welcomed inbound exchange students from DHBW University, Germany, and Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi (JOSTUM), Nigeria, further enriching campus diversity, strengthening cross-cultural learning, and reinforcing UoK's position as an emerging regional hub for international higher education.
These mobility programmes are awarded competitively, with selection based on academic merit, discipline, and leadership potential. Beyond academic enrichment, participants return with enhanced global perspectives, stronger professional networks, increased employability, and the confidence to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
