Andy Burnham was officially appointed Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on Monday, July 20, becoming the country’s seventh leader in a decade.

The former Greater Manchester Mayor and Labour MP succeeded Keir Starmer after winning overwhelming support from Labour MPs at a special party conference.

Labour’s parliamentary majority enabled the smooth internal transition without a general election.

Burnham met King Charles III at Buckingham Palace for the formal "kissing of hands” ceremony. He then entered 10 Downing Street, where he delivered his first speech as Prime Minister, pledging to restore stability, tackle homelessness, ease cost-of-living pressures, and deliver a 10-year plan for national renewal.

Starmer resigned last month amid low approval ratings and internal party challenges. He made a final address on Monday before departing.

A cabinet reshuffle is expected in the coming days.
