RSSB Tigers Vs REG 6:30 pm
APR Vs Patriots 9pm
Basketball fans are in for a thrilling Rwanda Basketball League (RBL) showdown on Friday, July 17, when defending champions APR take on arch-rivals Patriots in one of the season's most anticipated fixtures.
The game, scheduled for BK Arena, will not only showcase some of the league's finest talent but also pit two ambitious coaching staffs against each other in a tactical battle as both teams seek a crucial victory.
Here are four things to know ahead of the clash:
Both teams are neck and neck
The two sides head into the derby level on 27 points, although Patriots have played one more game (15) than APR (14).
APR have enjoyed a remarkable campaign, suffering just one defeat so far, while Patriots have lost three games.
Star players to watch
Both teams boast players capable of deciding the outcome of the contest.
APR will look to American forward Taefale Lenard Jr., a 2.03-metre athlete renowned for his defensive presence, rebounding ability and explosive dunks. Many Rwandan basketball fans will remember Lenard from his impressive performances with RSSB Tigers during the 2026 Basketball Africa League (BAL).
For Patriots, much will depend on Damaria Franklin, a 26-year-old American guard who has established himself as one of the league's top scorers. Franklin's shooting ability, speed, ball handling and playmaking make him a constant threat to opposing defenses.
Rich history and rivalry
APR are the most successful club in Rwandan basketball history, having won a record 16 league titles.
The military side claimed consecutive championships from 1995 to 2003 before adding further titles in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2023, 2024 and most recently in 2025.
Patriots, founded in 2014, have quickly established themselves among the country's basketball elite. They reached the playoff finals in their inaugural season before capturing their maiden league title two years later.
In 2019, Patriots secured their fourth championship after defeating REG BBC in a dramatic Game 7 at a packed Kigali Arena. They went on to become the first Rwandan club to compete in the Basketball Africa League (BAL), cementing their place among the country's top basketball institutions.
Tactical battle on the sidelines
Friday's contest will also feature an intriguing duel between two coaches with contrasting profiles.
APR head coach James Maye Jr. is among the most experienced tacticians in the Rwanda Basketball League.
Having coached in the United States, South America and Europe, he has transformed APR into a dominant force since arriving in Rwanda, guiding the club to back-to-back league titles while consistently getting the better of rivals Patriots and REG.
Across the court, Patriots coach Sunny Niyomugabo continues to establish himself as one of the country's brightest young coaches.
At just 36, he has already demonstrated his tactical ability after previously serving as assistant coach under Henry Mwinuka at Patriots and Yves Murenzi with the national team.
Niyomugabo also serves as head coach of Rwanda's U18 men's national basketball team, adding to his growing coaching credentials.
