While the FIFA World Cup trophy remains the ultimate prize, another of football's most coveted individual honours is also set to be decided this weekend.

As Argentina prepares to face Spain in the World Cup final and France take on England in the third-place playoff, the race for the Golden Boot has emerged as one of the tournament's defining storylines.

Unlike many previous World Cups, where one player had virtually wrapped up the award before the final, the battle to finish as the tournament's top scorer remains wide open, with several of the game's biggest stars still in contention.

Argentina captain Lionel Messi and France superstar Kylian Mbappé are level at the top of the scoring charts with eight goals each, while England captain Harry Kane remains within touching distance on seven goals. England midfielder Jude Bellingham has enjoyed a sensational tournament with six goals, while France forward and reigning Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembélé has five.

With all five players still having one match left to play, the final standings could yet change dramatically.

Messi appears to hold a slight advantage heading into the weekend. In addition to his eight goals, the 39-year-old has provided four assists, compared with Mbappé's three.

That could prove crucial.

Under FIFA regulations, if two or more players finish level on goals, the Golden Boot is decided first by the number of assists. If the players are still tied, the award goes to the player who scored his goals in fewer minutes.

Messi chasing another piece of history

Already regarded by many as the greatest player in football history, Messi has once again been the driving force behind Argentina's run to a second consecutive World Cup final.

His eight goals only tell part of the story.

The Argentine captain has repeatedly delivered when his country needed him most, producing decisive goals and assists in the knockout rounds while orchestrating much of Argentina's attacking play.

Victory over Spain would not only give Messi another World Cup winners' medal but could also secure his first Golden Boot since finishing runner-up in the scoring charts at previous tournaments.

Mbappé refuses to fade

Although France's hopes of winning the World Cup ended with their semi-final defeat to Spain, Mbappé remains firmly in contention for the Golden Boot.

The French captain has once again demonstrated why he is considered one of the world's most lethal forwards, scoring eight goals while producing moments of brilliance throughout the tournament.

He will have one final opportunity to move clear of Messi when France face England in Saturday's third-place playoff.

Kane, Bellingham and Dembélé still have hope

The race is not exclusively between Messi and Mbappé.

Kane's seven goals mean the England captain could still claim the Golden Boot if he enjoys a prolific afternoon against France and the two leaders fail to add to their totals.

Bellingham, meanwhile, has emerged as one of the stars of the tournament. The Real Madrid midfielder has scored six goals, including decisive braces against Mexico and Norway in successive knockout matches, transforming himself into an unlikely contender for the award.

France's Dembélé also remains mathematically in the race. The Ballon d'Or holder has five goals and would require an extraordinary performance in the third-place playoff to overhaul the leaders.

A fitting finale

The Golden Boot has often gone to players whose teams reach the latter stages of the World Cup, and this year's race reflects the quality of the tournament's biggest stars.

Messi is seeking to crown another remarkable World Cup with both the trophy and the tournament's top scorer award.

Mbappé is determined to end France's campaign with individual silverware after another outstanding tournament.

Kane, Bellingham and Dembélé will all hope to produce one final statement before the curtain falls.

By the end of the weekend, one player will lift football's greatest prize.

Another will walk away with the Golden Boot.

Whether it is Messi, Mbappé or one of the chasing pack, the race promises to be another one to watch before the 2026 FIFA World Cup comes to a close.
