Patel tightens grip as Kanangire shines in ARC2
Saturday, July 11, 2026

Defending champion Karan Patel moved a step closer to retaining his Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally title after extending his overall lead to nearly five minutes at the end of Saturday's action in the third round of the FIA African Rally Championship (ARC) in Bugesera District.

After 11 competitive stages, the Kenyan star dominated the field to post a cumulative time of 1:14:05.6 opening a commanding 4 minutes 49.9 seconds advantage over Tanzania's Ahmed Huwel, who sits second overall.

Patel maintained his relentless pace throughout the day, capping off Saturday by winning SS11 Gako 3 in 3:37.9 to cement his status as the overwhelming favourite heading into Sunday's final six stages.

While Patel appears firmly in control at the front, the battle for the remaining podium places remains fiercely contested.

The closest fight is between Tanzanian teammates Ahmed Huwel and Manveer Singh Birdi, with just 19.8 seconds separating the pair after 11 stages.

Birdi also celebrated a career milestone by claiming his maiden African Rally Championship stage victory in the Škoda Fabia Rally2, an encouraging sign as he continues to adapt to the new car.

Indian driver Naveen Puligilla, who impressed despite opening the road for much of the rally, dropped from fourth to fifth overall after being overtaken by Kenya's Aakif Virani.

Despite the setback, Puligilla's consistent pace has kept him firmly in contention for RC3 honours, even while carrying the disadvantage of sweeping loose gravel for the competitors behind.

Among the Rwandan contingent, Christian Kanangire emerged as the standout local performer in the FIA African Rally Championship.

Although he finished ninth overall, Kanangire dominated the ARC2 category, finishing more than 11 minutes ahead of Uganda's Oscar Ntambi to claim the class lead.

The achievement marked a significant milestone in the Rwandan driver's career.

"I achieved my goal. My focus was on competing in the ARC2 category, and I'm happy to finish first there. Winning the National category as well makes it even more special," Kanangire said.

In the National Rally Championship (NRC), 21-year-old Michuki Hinga continued to impress with the best performance of his young career.

The Kenyan youngster climbed to second overall among NRC competitors after local favourite Giancarlo Davite retired from the rally. His consistency throughout Saturday has put him in a strong position heading into the final day.

Sunday's concluding leg features six special stages, including the decisive Ruhuha Power Stage, where valuable championship points will be up for grabs.

Although Patel carries a commanding advantage into the final day, the battle for the remaining podium positions and category honours promises an exciting finish to the 2026 Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally.
