RUSIZI - Police in Rusizi District have arrested two men whom they found in possession of counterfeit notes. Emmanuel Nsengamungu and Donati Mbungo, both money changers in Kamembe town were arrested on Wednesday, following reports that they had given Asifiwe Byendima a Congolese national, US $7,000 worth of fake notes.
RUSIZI - Police in Rusizi District have arrested two men whom they found in possession of counterfeit notes.
Emmanuel Nsengamungu and Donati Mbungo, both money changers in Kamembe town were arrested on Wednesday, following reports that they had given Asifiwe Byendima a Congolese national, US $7,000 worth of fake notes.
Byendima, narrated that he changed money at a forex-bureau operated by the suspects, where it turned out that he was given fake dollars instead.
"I had come to buy some merchandise so I needed to have money in foreign currency whereupon I was tricked at the forex bureau operated by the two but I thank police for their intervention. I believe that I will be given back my money,” Byendima said.
Police recovered US $ 3,000 counterfeits notes of different denominations from the supsects.
According to police, several residents especially businessmen have been complaining that the two have been dealing in counterfeit currency.
At the police station, Nsengamungu admitted to being a counterfeit currency trader but said Byendima had inflated the figure he claims to have lost. Instead he said that he offered Byendima 2, 000 dollars not 7000 as he claims.
