RWANDA’s rising duo of Hamis Gatete and Gisele Umumararungu has qualified for this year’s Africa Junior tennis championship to be held in Morocco in April.
Gatete finished third in the U-14 category of the East Africa Junior Tennis Championship held which climaxed in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania over the weekend after overcoming Kenyan Ismail Cyangawa 6-4, 6-3 in the third/fourth play-off.
This age-category was won by Burundi when Guyorly Irakunda (Burundi), who beat Tanzanian Shaaban Ibrahim.
In the girls’ U-14 category, Umumararungu won her two matches in the round-robin to secure her ticket to the continental championship.
The 14-year-old defeated Kenya’s Michelle Onyancha 6-4 7-5 and Ethiopia’s Cekl Samweet 7-5 7-5 respectively.
Top five players from both the U-14 and U-16 categories organized by the International Tennis Federation and Confederation of African Tennis (ITC/CAT) qualified for the African Junior tournament to be staged in Morocco in April.
In team standings, Rwanda finished fourth behind Burundi, Kenya and Tanzania.
