There are a number of people who have affected my life positively and one of them is my grandfather. He is someone I treasure so much; he has been my life’s guide. Through his experience he has taught me many things.
He always says that things do not come easily. “We have to work to have what we need in life.” He says we have to be open-minded. He showed me that the world is full of many opportunities. These are the three most important things that my grandfather taught me.
This is why he is my life guide and thanks to him, I am what I am because of him.
Grand father taught me to be a hard working person I remember when he told me that if you do not want to be poor, and homeless, you have got to work hard at school.
In order to understand him, it’s important to speak about what he went through during his youth.
He narrates how he used to live in bad conditions, and he remembers this dark period of his life. One day he vowed never to live again in such bad times. So he valued every job he did even when it meant earning the hardest way to provide for his family. Grandfather has worked in various capacities and different careers where he travelled a lot. Every time I am away from home I remember his tone of voice saying “when I was young.”
He taught me to value hard work. He supported me to pass my school examinations which earned me a position in a government school. My grandfather is the kind of person who keeps telling me to “work more, to learn more.”
Since he is a man experience I learn a lot from him; he has taught me to be open-minded in life.
The best thing I have leant from him is to have an open-mindset if I want to succeed in life. When I share a cup of tea with him, he talks about my country’s culture, fairytales and the beauty of Rwanda, the land of a thousand hills. Above all he admires people who open their spirit to other people, other cultures, and who like discovering new things.
