Next week the school term begins however, many students have found themselves in trouble due to sleeping in class.

Some teachers simply send a student out of class while others throw chalk to a student who in most cases ignores the teachers move. All of these situations are embarrassing.

It’s a familiar scene. Thirty minutes into a one and a half-hour class, one’s vision begins to blur. Next, their eyelids feel droopy and heavy, followed closely by what is called «The Bob» by frequent victims.

The neck suddenly loses its ability to hold up the head. Before they know it, they’re asleep.

The worst part of falling asleep during class is that it’s so hard to stop. Once the eyes get tired, one’s body puts itself on a set course to a nap, class or no class.

Although it may seem that no teacher can tell whether one is sleeping or just resting their chin very firmly on their hand, the likelihood that someone’s attention has been called to their lack of consciousness is high.

Why do students fall asleep in class? Sometimes, they suffer from sleepless nights. Sometimes, they simply don’t have good sleeping habits or sometimes so stressed from their daily routines that they sleep.

And sometimes, they are just bored out of their minds.

The best thing one can do to avoid sleeping in class is to have an open mind.
Students should try to stand while they read or assume an inconvenient position.

Or mark out what they must read before a particular time and be filled with the passion to get it done bearing in mind that they must get the best of understanding above any other reader.

The other ways of overcoming sleep in class include:

Drawing.
Drawing is a pretty good way to stay awake. Make sure you are not doodling.

Doodling is different from drawing.

Doodling makes you daydream and could make them fall asleep even faster! Try drawing the person in front of you or try to draw your own self portrait. It doesn’t have to be nice.

You want to draw something that keeps you interested in actually finishing the drawing. Keeping your brain interested will keep you from falling asleep.

Try to think of something hard to remember.

What did you have for dinner two days ago? I honestly don’t remember. Do you?

Trying to answer questions that are at the ‘tip of the tongue’ will guarantee to keep you from sleeping...maybe even tonight until you figure out the answer!

Raise your hand and ask a question!
This is for the desperate ones out there and is a sure win. I’m sure during a sleepy session it would be hard to conjure up a question, but if you are able to come up with something by all means do it!

Stretch!
Not many people stretch when they are sleepy. Stretching will relieve yourself and will stimulate some muscles so that you can focus a bit more.

As the School term approaches next week, always try to stay awake in class because paying attention in class is a prerequisite to success.
