Raila Odinga Centre (ROC), Friday donated sports equipment to two schools in Kigali city.
ROC is a non-profit organisation set up by the Prime Minister of Kenya, Raila Odinga.
The centre donated the materials to Lycee de Kigali Secondary School and St. Andre Secondary School in Nyarugenge District.
In an interview with this newspaper, shortly after handing over the materials to Lycee de Kigali, Rosemary Odinga, the Executive Director of ROC who is also a daughter of Raila Odinga said: “We are donating this to help young Rwandans as East Africans to develop their sports talents because we believe sports development can enable any country to achieve sustainable development in the future”.
“When you look at the best paid African sportsmen and women in the world, they come from countries which have already invested a lot in developing their youth, and we as East Africans need to start developing our talents so that we can export it and it’s in this regard that the centre is donating sports items to various schools within East Africa” Odinga said.
She noted that they have so far donated similar items to six secondary schools in Kenya, two in Tanzania and two in Uganda, saying they will extend similar assistance to Burundi and South Sudan.
Moses Mutokambali, a coach of Lycee de Kigali basket ball team commended the gesture by the centre and said it will motivate the beneficiaries to improve.
