KIGALI - Joseph Ntawangundi, an assistant to presidential aspirant Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza, was arrested Saturday following revelations by the coordinator of Gacaca in the Eastern Province, Beline Uwineza, that there was an arrest warrant out for him.
Police spokesman, Eric Kayiranga, confirmed the arrest saying that Ntawangundi was being held at Remera Police Station.
“He was arrested on the basis of an arrest warrant issued by the Gacaca Court,” said.
Ntawangundi first drew media attention when he was involved in a fracas at Kinyinya Sector. FDU immediately launched a media campaign and posted his photos on their website.
That apparently could have been his undoing.
Sources revealed that when his name was mentioned in the media, it drew the attention of people who were conversant with his case.
The matter was reported to the authorities, which took time to verify whether Ntawangundi’s photos corresponded with a fugitive convicted by Gacaca in 2007, and there was no doubt it was him.
Ntawangundi, a senior member of Ingabire’s yet to be registered political party, FDU-Inkingi, arrived in the country two weeks ago.
