Cecafa Kagame Cup: APR drawn in Pool B

RWANDA LEAGUE champions APR have been drawn in Pool B of the 2014 Cecafa Kagame Cup to be held in Rwanda from August 8-24.

Group A: Rayon Sport (Rwanda), Yanga (Tanzania), Coffee (Ethiopia), Atlbara (South Sudan) and KMKM (Zanzibar).

Group B: APR (Rwanda), KCC (Uganda), Flambeau de l’est (Burundi), Gor Mahia (Kenya) and Telecom (Djibouti)

Group C: Vital’O (Burundi), El Merreikh (Sudan), Police (Rwanda) and Benadir (Somalia)

RWANDA LEAGUE champions APR have been drawn in Pool B of the 2014 Cecafa Kagame Cup to be held in Rwanda from August 8-24.

In a draw conducted yesterday at the Rwanda Football Federation (Ferwafa) headquarters in Kigali, three-time Kagame Cup winners will battle Kenya’s Gor Mahia), Djibouti’s Telecom and Flambeau of Burundi as defending champions Vital’O of Burundi lock horns with El Merreikh (Sudan), Police ( Rwanda) and Benadir (Somalia) in Pool C. 

Gor Mahia will be making a return for the first time since 1996 when they represented Kenya as the champions of the 1995 national league.

Pool A comprises of Rayon Sport (Rwanda), Yanga (Tanzania), Coffee (Ethiopia), Atlbara (South Sudan) and KMKM (Zanzibar). 

A total of 34 matches - will be broadcast live by Supersport and will be staged at Amahoro and Nyamirambo Stadium. 

Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye revealed that  the event will mark 20th anniversary of Rwanda Genocide against the Tutsi.

“Supersport, the long time Cecafa partners is one of the sponsors and will show all the matches live. The fixtures and time schedules will be released next week.”

Supersport and Cecafa will sit next week to decide on the fixtures and timings. Three best placed teams from Group A and B and two others from Group C will qualify to the quarter finals.

“The President has done his best, so it’s up to the private sector, individuals and corporate companies to come and support this competition. It’s a competition in honour of the head of state of this country.”

President Paul Kagame, who is also patron of Cecafa, has sponsored the regional club championship to a tune of US$60,000 in cash prize annually since 2002. A further $15,000 has also been channeled into the organisation of the event.
