Investment is what will make us a middle-income economy

Editor,

The kinds of investments mulled here, if they materialise, rather than foreign aid (as valuable as that can also be if well-targeted and efficiently used) are what will really propel us into a middle-income economy and also reduce poverty rates even further.

That, however, will not just happen by itself. We as a country and people will also need to do our part: to establish the requisite human and infrastructure capacity to be able to fully exploit these investments to our benefit, to ensure we are able to derive the multiplier effects that strategic investments can generate, and to ensure that local businesses establish themselves as part of these investments’ critical value chains.

The ball, as they say, is now in our court.
