Former league champions Gicumbi Handball Club mercilessly beat Nyamirambo-based rivals Nyakabanda 45-18 on Saturday to move level with archrivals Police at the top of the table standings.

The 2007 champions are targeting to remain unbeaten for the rest of the championship, which still has four rounds of matches to go.

“We should consider every single league game the final for us in order to avoid dropping a point up to the end of the season,” Gicumbi coach Ebenezel Murenzi told this paper after the match played in Gicumbi District. He noted, “It seems our game against the champions Police next month could be the one to determine this year’s league winner, which is why we will take the tie as serious as possible. We hope to use the most of home advantage to end Police reign at the top.”

As it stands, Police and Gicumbi lead with 27 points respectively but Police are top thanks to their first round victory over their rivals. Former champions APR are third with 21 points, while ES Kigoma stand in fourth position with 20 points.
