More than 700 teachers from primary schools around the country will undergo English language training to improve their skills in conducting lessons. Up to 90 schools will benefit from the training programme which also covers Kinyarwanda and Mathematics subjects.
The training, dubbed qualitative training is organised by Rwanda Education Board (REB) in collaboration with USAID-funded Literacy, Language, and Learning (L3) Initiative.
The Head of Education Development Centre at EDC, which is the implementer of the L3 programme, told The New Times that teachers in Gasabo district are already benefiting from the training before it is rolled out to other districts including Bugesera, Rulindo, Karongi and Huye.
“We want to ensure that this programme empowers teachers with skills, something that we expect will translate into improved quality of education in their respective schools,” said Said Yasin, adding that the training, which started on Monday, will enable teachers learn how to use the beautifully illustrated story collections, teachers’ guides, and interactive audio instruction programmes to effectively develop key literacy and numeracy skills. Next week, the training will be extended to the other remaining districts. It will also benefit district and dector education officers.
Mary Sugrue, the Technical Director of L3, said that the programme will also contribute towards enabling teachers to adopt new methods of audio and visual teaching and learning
As a means to determine efficiency of the programme, teachers who will undergo the training will have to give feed back about the trainings while students will also be given tests to ascertain the impact.
