The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports and Culture has called on all sportsmen and women to help the survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutis, especially during this commemoration period.

Edward Kalisa said: “As sportsmen, we need to be there for the survivors to help them since some of them are vulnerable and need support, especially during this time when the country is remembering the victims.”

“Let us commemorate the Genocide perpetrated against the  Tutsi by developing ourselves and helping those who need help, particularly the survivors,” the official stated.

Kalisa called on the sportsmen and women across the country to be part of commemoration programmes that are being held at the grassroots level.

During the seven days of the  19thcommemoration, public lectures and town hall meetings will be conducted every afternoon. And, no form of sports entertainment will take place during the commemoration week. Flags in the country are also flying at half-mast.
