AMAVUBI Stars centre back Edwin Ouon was left elated after being called up to the team for Sunday’s 2014 World Cup qualifier against Mali at Amahoro stadium.

The Ivory Coast-born Ouon last featured for Amavubi in 2009 during the 2010 World Cup qualifiers. He played in the 1-3 loss to Algeria on October 11 away in Blida and in the 0-1 loss to Egypt in Kigali on May 5, all in the third round qualification matches.

Speaking exclusively to Saturday Sport on Thursday, the AEL Limassol defender, who featured in the Uefa Europa League this year said, “It was an honor for me when I was contacted by the coach to play for Rwanda again.”

He added, “I know I have a responsibility to repay the faith the coach has entrusted in me, and in my mind, there is no doubt that we can get a good result against Mali on Sunday.”

“I need to do my best because this is an important game not only for the country but our career as players. The world cup qualifier is a big competition and it will be a real honor for me to don the national team jersey and hope to help the team win on Sunday,” added Ouon.

Rwanda has never made it on the global stage and is yet to make the Afcon finals since debuting in 2004.

Benin leads the group with four points, one above second-placed Algeria, who are level on points with Mali in third place, while Rwanda is bottom with one point.
