What Rwandans say about Pope Francis I election

As a Catholic, it was a problem not to have a shepherd.  But I am happy that we have one now. The fact that the new Pope is from Latin America, shows how universal the Catholic Church is.  We heard that he takes care of poor and even his papal name is derived from someone who cared from poor people.

As  a Catholic, I receive with pleasure the good news of the new Pope and also the fact that he is from another continent, other than Europe. What should be changed? Maybe the way the church preaches because it seems more conservative and needs to be modernised abit.

Bishop Smaragde Mbonyintege, the Bishop of Kabgayi Diocese

The Catholic Church in Rwanda was surprised by Cardinal Bergoglio’s election as Pope.  But we trust the cardinals that voted for him because they know him better than we do. The name chosen by the new pope reflects humility and love to the poor according to the gospel.

Truthfully, I did not know about Pope Francis but I am happy that we have a new shepherd after waiting for all the time with curiosity. I do not think he should change so much, we should continue with what Pope Benedict XVI started.
