APR FC became the second Rwandan side after Police to be eliminated from the Africa club competitions by a Burundian opposition in a space of 24 hours.

Despite beating Vital’O 1-0 in the return leg match played on Sunday at Prince Louis Rwagasore stadium in Bujumbura, the Primus National Football League champions were eliminated from this year’s Champions League on the away goal rule.

APR, who needed a 2-0 victory to progress to the first round in their 11th appearance in Africa’s top club competition, dominated possession and scored the only goal of the game through young striker Barnabe Mubumbyi in the 75th minute but it was not enough to grant them qualification.

Instead Vital’O, who won the first leg in Kigali 2-1 two weeks ago, progressed to the next round on the away goal rule.

APR’s early exit follows another disappointing elimination by Police FC, who drew 1-1 against LLB Academic of Burundi to lose 1-2 on goal aggregate.

This is the first time in the history of Rwandan football that Rwandan clubs had faced elimination in the preliminary round at the hands of teams from this region.
