Ghana defender John Paintsil was taken to hospital on Tuesday after suffering from exhaustion and dehydration.

The former West Ham and Fulham defender, 31, received medical care at a hospital in Accra before being released to continue with his recovery at home.

The incident comes after Paintsil was arrested on Friday after reportedly assaulting his wife and a neighbour.

“The past five days have taken a severe emotional toll on the Paintsil family,” said a spokesman for the player. “And that toll manifested itself in the unfortunate incident this morning.” Paintsil spent the night in prison on Friday and was released on bail Saturday after he was detained over allegations that he stabbed his wife.

He is accused of stabbing his wife in the upper eyelid. She was taken to hospital, but has now been released.

Earlier this month, Paintsil was part of the Ghana team that finished fourth at the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

The full-back, who represented Ghana at both the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, last played his club football in Israel after leaving England’s Leicester City in 2012.
