Refer tothe story, “District education officers complete OLPC training” (The New Times, September 6). I am very sorry to sound so pessimistic but this is one of those projects which we will, sooner or later, come to realise that it was a waste of our state resources.
Rwandan education needs more quality teachers than distributing these mini-expensive laptops to the few who can afford them. To my understanding, Rwandan kids can benefit more from hiring and training more quality teachers. These OLPC laptops won’t automatically make every teacher a good teacher.
Many schools in Rwanda need their infrastructures developed to accommodate the growing number of students – give them water, electricity, improve the sanitation, build libraries and stock them with enough books, and support a physical computer laboratory that can be easily managed and controlled.
