Adrien Niyonshuti just can’t stop winning. The Team Rwanda rider out-sprinted his tour rivals yesterday to stay on course of winning his second Tour de Rwanda accolade.
The 2006 champion clocked 46 minutes and 43 seconds after a fascinating sprint on the sixth stage (Nyamata to Gashora) to prove his doubters wrong.
Despite a rest day on Thursday, Niyonshuti remained lethal as he outpaced Nathan Byukusenge who finished second; a minute and 17 seconds off the pace.
Defending champion Abraham Ruhumuriza finished fourth (49:19). The win took his tally to five wins in six stages. Defending champion Abraham Niyonshuti is the other rider with a stage win after piping the former in the fourth stage.
After the win, Niyonshuti said, “I’m happy for today’s win.
“This was a perfect stage for me but it’s still early to celebrate.
Niyonshuti now holds a 12-minute lead as the race heads into its second last stage today.
The riders will race through the longest stretch of the tour when they ride from Kigali to Nyagatare, covering a distance of 171 km before covering the same distance back to Kigali in the eighth and final stage on Sunday.
