GATSIBO - Four residents in Kabarore Sector, Gatsibo District have been arrested for allegedly selling 70 sacks of government-donated fertilisers. According to Police, the arrested residents were from Simbwa cell.
“They started this illegal business a few weeks after the government provided them with fertilisers meant to be applied in phase A of the new agricultural season,” a Police official said.
Fidel Rwakibibi, president of Jijuka Cooperative in Kabarore sector, said they were tipped off by the person who had agreed to buy the fertilisers from the residents.
Mary Mukabagire, one of those arrested, said she was convinced by fertiliser dealers in the district to sell them four sacks of 50 kilograms each, with a promise of more fertilisers in the next phase.
“They convinced me to sell them four sacks of fertilizers. I decided to sell them because they had promised more fertilizers,” she said.
The district Mayor, Anselme Majoro Rurangwa, warned residents against selling government-donated fertilisers, saying that tough measures will be taken against the culprits.
“We warn whoever will be caught that they will be heavily punished,” he said.
