A new kid on the block within telecoms
In the third quarter of 2011, the stage was set, starting early this year, for the most bruising stage of competition within Rwanda’s telecoms industry, with the highly anticipated launch of operations of the Bharti Airtel. As the new telecoms operator, the firm announced that Marcellin Paluku will act as its Country Manager.
The appointment can be interpreted to mean that MTN and TIGO will have to reposition accordingly in order to keep watch over their shoulders in order to keep their market shares intact.
Last year, saw MTN’s unrivalled position being subjected to serious threats by Tigo. The two companies will definitely find themselves being seriously challenged by Bharti during the course of the new year, if Bharti’s entry tactics in other parts of East Africa is anything to go by.
