Better auditing standards vital for economic growth

Allow me to respond to a story that appeared in yesterday’s issue of The NewTimes titled “ICPAR, OCCAR partner to boost auditing standards.” That accountants in both the private and public sector lack the requisite skills to prepare financial statements in accordance with applicable accounting requirements is a fair analysis.

While Rwanda has made considerable effort to align its accounting and auditing practices with internationally accepted standards, a lot more is still needed in terms of continuous training .

With the economy growing pretty fast, we must take concrete steps to strengthen all the pillars of accounting and auditing.

Currently, universities offer accounting diploma and degree programmes but those aspiring to gain professional qualifications have to rely on programmes from abroad.
