The Annual General Assembly of Amani Forum Rwanda, yesterday, unanimously elected Senator Jean Damascene Bizimana, as the new Chairperson of the parliamentary Forum.

He replaces Denis Polisi, who has been at the helm of the Forum for the last two years.

Bizimana, 49, holds a PhD in Law. He is also a lecturer at the National University of Rwanda.

Amani Forum is a parliamentary initiative working to build peace and mitigate conflict in the Great Lakes Region, and has national chapters in at least 10 regional countries.

Bizimana will be deputized by the former Treasurer of the Forum, Pelagie Mukantaganzwa. MP Yvonne Uwayisenga retained her post at the Forum’s Secretary General.

Saidat Mukanoheli, who initially served as the Vice Treasurer, replaced Mukantaganzwa as the Treasurer.

In a separate development, MP Tharcisse Shamakokera, pleaded with his colleagues to consider providing assistance to South Sudan, saying the country needed support in almost all sectors.

“We should interest them to join the regional Amani Forum,” said Shamakokera.
